“Dereck didn’t just give me a cello—he handed me an instrument that felt like an extension of my voice. From our very first conversation, he listened to every question I had with patience, generosity, and care. He took the time to understand what I was looking for in sound, feel, and response, and set up the instrument just for me. The result is a cello of extraordinary warmth, resonance, and soul. It sings. It breathes. It continues to grow with me. I am so proud to play it, and so grateful for the hands that made it.” Tian Sanchez-Ballado, DMA
My name is Elise Jimenez, I’m a professional cellist and have been working with Dereck Coons since around 2008/2009. He was originally recommended to me by my cello teacher, David Bjella, for maintenance and bow rehairs. From my initial meeting with Dereck, I have always found him to be a man of knowledge, curiosity and integrity. Not only did he teach me at the first meeting how I could keep my instrument in good shape and what things to watch out for, but he always gave me more than what I asked for when he did work on my cellos. The highlight of my time with Dereck was when he made me my own cello, a copy of a Gagliano cello owned by Helga Winold. Dereck spent a good deal of time with me asking me what kind of sound I wanted the cello to have, and took into account what ensembles I normally play in to craft a one-of a kind cello. is a beautiful instrument to look at, much like all of Dereck’s instruments, and marvelous to play. Dereck shines as a luthier because he listens to his clients, their immediate needs on a repair to crafting an instrument. He is the only luthier I know of that makes a concerted to pour time into learning more about making instruments and not just rely on what he already does know. He is honest, and will not sell you something you don’t need, but also generous in the quality of his work. Your instrument will always sound or look more beautiful when he gives it back to you. I can’t say enough about the level of gratitude I have for Dereck and his work. He is truly an amazing Individual and you can’t go wrong with anything he will do for you.

I've been working with Dereck Coons and his team at Violin Shop Tampa for nearly fifteen years. Over the years, Dereck has consistently provided expert care for my instruments—always making thoughtful, substantial improvements that are both musically impactful and cost-effective. In 2024, Dereck built a new cello for me, and the experience was exceptional from start to finish. He kept me updated throughout the entire process, sending detailed photos and updates along the way. Dereck asked about the tone that I wanted and what setting I wanted it to cater to and executed them beautifully. He also had several professionals of the Florida Orchestra play it, as I was located about two hours away during the building process. The cello is not only visually stunning, but its tone continues to open up and develop each time I play. The price was incredibly fair for the quality of craftsmanship and care that went into it. Dereck’s dedication to his work and to the musicians he serves is rare and deeply appreciated. I can’t recommend him highly enough.

“I have been the proud owner of a cello made by Mr. Coons for six years. I have enjoyed every minute I have spent playing it. I enjoy its warm, round tone. The more narrow pattern is perfect for me because it is extremely comfortable. The projection is fully made up for by the fact that the instrument is deeper than other patterns. It is reliable and consistent across the registers, and a true joy to play on. It has proven to be an extraordinarily resilient instrument, performing excellently through international travel, varying humidities, and countless performances. My bond with this instrument is a wonderful part of my life, and I look forward to many more years of music making with it
